Ivan Yarygin
Russian Armed Forces adopted the 9-mm Yarygin pistol in 2003, which is still used today. A Russian-made self-loading pistol made by Yarygin, “Rook” (GRAU Index – 6P35). A team of designers led by V. A. Yarygin developed the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant’s mass production methods.

As a shorthand for Mechanical Plant, MP is spelled in Latin letters. A competition was announced in 1990 by the USSR Ministry of Defense to design a new pistol to replace the PM pistol, which was in service but still needed to meet modern requirements fully. A pistol with sufficient ammunition that could penetrate low-level body armor was needed. Yarygin submitted a pistol to this competition in 1993.

Ivan Yarygin Test results
Test results indicated that the pistol (MP-443) won the competition in 2000. A 9-mm Yarygin pistol (YA) was adopted by the Russian Armed Forces in 2003. Russian Armed Forces, internal troops, special units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, and other law enforcement agencies have begun using Yarygin pistols since 2010. PYa was mass-produced for the Russian Army in 2011. The Yarygin pistol became the standard weapon of the Western Military District in 2012.
