Designed to provide silent and flameless shooting at a range of up to 50 meters, the PSS (index GRAU 6P28) is a Soviet self-loading pistol. In addition to being compact, it differs from the PB in terms of its rate of fire, which comes from using a particular cartridge.

Instead of powder gases pushing the bullet, a special piston wedges the bullet in the cartridge case and locks the powder gases inside after giving it an initial speed. After the chamber and bolt box have rolled back, due to depressurization of the barrel, there is no reduced pressure in the bore behind the bullet (powder gases don’t leave the cartridge case). When the bullet takes off, atmospheric air rushing into the barrel will make additional noise (pop) due to the reduced pressure behind the bullet.
