Striker Shotgun Fortnite The Striker, The Street Sweeper, And The Protector

Rhodesian gunsmith Hilton Walker developed it in the first half of the 1980s. A prototype of this design was first manufactured in the Republic of South Africa in the mid-eighties. This shotgun was notable for its large magazine capacity, high rate of fire, weight, and large width dimensions.

Striker Shotgun Fortnite revolver type 12-gauge combat smoothbore shotgun modified for use in South Africa

As early as the mid-80s, the new design was intended for military and police operations that required high firepower over short distances.

A rotating drum-type magazine held 12 rounds in Walker’s design, about twice as many as most shotgun magazines. Using original design solutions, it was possible to achieve a high rate of fire with single shots. Shotgun shells of 70 mm (12/70) length were used only for standard 12-gauge ammunition.

Strikers using shotguns

With a folded stock and a short barrel in a casing, this Striker shotgun has the basic features of a shotgun.

The Striker smoothbore shotgun operates like a revolver. As we have already mentioned, a rotating integral drum feeds the cartridges, and the drum has 12 chambers. Disassembling the shotgun is the only way to separate the drum from the weapon. Upon assembly, the cylinder is covered by a non-rotating aluminium alloy casing that contains a loading hole. Loading the gun is done by adding one cartridge at a time to the drum through a window on the back.

Each time you reload, you must manually remove previously fired cartridge casings from the drum one at a time. In this process, a spring-loaded extractor rod is mounted on the barrel casing on the right side so a new cartridge can be loaded in place of the spent cartridge case.Featuring an internal hammer, the trigger mechanism of this shotgun is self-cocking.

Because the weapon is operated using a revolver mechanism, where the cocking of the mainspring and rotation of the drum is performed by the shooter when pressing the trigger, the trigger could have to be pushed very hard, as the drum is enormous and heavy. The spring mechanism on Walker’s shotgun made it easier to turn the cylinder independently without needing muscle power.

Using the key in the centre of the drum casing, the shooter winds the spiral spring after loading the drum with cartridges. By charging this spring, when the shooter pulls the trigger after releasing the hammer and firing, this spring rotates the drum 1/12 of a complete turn, after which the ratchet mechanism stops the drum from rotating.

The spring brings the next chamber containing a cartridge to the barrel’s breech. A scheme like this can provide high shooting rates without the shooter exerting effort. However, the spring mechanism in this scheme needed to be fixed and operated unevenly depending on the tension of the spring, which resulted in the drum rotating more than one step after the trigger was pressed once.

The gun includes a front handle on the bottom of the barrel casing for a comfortable and more stable hold during fast-aimed shooting. A light alloy aluminium folding stock is also included on the shotgun, which folds up and forward and is located on top of the receiver when folded.

Gun barrels are sheathed in perforated casings with holes for cooling, protecting the shooter’s hands from burns. High-strength polymer is used for both the grip and trigger mechanism. The only way to prevent an accidental shot is through the push-button mechanical safety behind the trigger.

As a result of the drum magazine’s weight and size, this weapon could be more convenient to handle due to its heaviness and size. Additionally, the weapon’s operation mechanism needed to be improved.

Protective cover for shotguns

Following the end of Rhodesia, Walker moved to South Africa and, considering all these reasons, continuously improved his brainchild, which in the late 1980s became known as “Protecta”. These days, Reutech Defense Industries mainly manufactures the Protecta shotgun in South Africa. There are manufactured copies of the Protecta in use with different countries and various units, both in South Africa and foreign countries where these weapons are exported.

In the Protecta shotgun, a manual rotation mechanism replaces the spring-cocked cylinder rotation mechanism. An under-barrel handle rotates around the barrel’s axis to drive this mechanism. Using a special pawl, the barrel casing rotates one/12 of a complete turn when the handle is turned. Even though reloading has not changed, spent cartridges (along with the last one) fly out of the drum when fired. As a result of the correct removal of powder gases, spent cartridges were extracted. In the Striker model, unused cartridges and cases are removed using a barrel-mounted extractor rod. Striker and Protecta shotguns are similar in general.

In the original, the Protecta and Striker shotguns were equipped with short barrels. Still, for civilian use, they are distributed with barrels of increased length (starting from 500 mm), and the two chambers of the drum are tightly blocked with plugs, which limit the number of rounds loaded to ten. When the stock is folded, a particular hook blocks shooting. Legislation in the states where the guns were sold caused all these changes for civilian versions.

North American state-produced Striker shotguns are analogous to this modification. With this model, you could never shoot with the butt folded because it had a long barrel and a mechanism that prevented you from doing so. The stock of a civilian shotgun is folded on a street sweeper

Shotguns of this design: conclusions

A relatively high rate of fire is still one of the main advantages of the Protecta, Streetsweeper, and Striker shotguns. The drum magazine capacity is also significant. This is a very expensive firearm – it is vast and quite heavy, and it takes a while to reload the magazine, especially when all the cartridges have been fired.

Different versions of this design have different barrels, lengths from minimum to maximum, and folding button devices. Some models had no stock since the stock could be removed.
